The WHO was established in 1948 by the office of international Public Hygiene, League of Nation’s Organization, UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration before the commencement of World war 2.

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. In the 21st century, health is a shared responsibility. Involving equitable access to essential care and collective defence against transnational threats.

Organization

The WHO is comprised of a General assembly, a board, a Secretariat, a Regional organization.

• World Health Assembly

  The general assembly discuss decisions regarding the WHO project and its policies, as well as appointing the secretary general of head-quaters, selecting board members, approving financial control and deliberation on the budget.

• Executive Board

  34members of the board of directors are elected in a extraordinary general meeting. Their term is 3years. The meeting is held 2-3times annually and is used to make general decisions and policy and project plans.

• Secretariat

  The Secretariat of the WHO is staffed by experts in all over the world regional offices.

• Regional organization

  The WHO consist of all the local committees and regional offices.

Funding

The WHO is funded by contribution from member states donors.
